BirdLife International works through its programme and partner organizations on projects in single countries as well as on wider-reaching initiatives directed by international teams organized through the global network of BirdLife. Two of these international initiatives include working to save sea birds and to establish a protected forest area in Sumatra, Indonesia.
Save sea birds to conserve the sea
The decline of wild birds because of destruction of the environment and land development is happening worldwide. But among all birds the decline in populations of seabirds is most dramatic. Many sea bird populations have fallen so rapidly that they are now on the brink of extinction.

‘Saving the World’s Sea Birds’ Project
One most serious threat to sea birds is long line fishing. International cooperation is essential to protect sea birds because they travel across long distances over the high seas, crossing many international borders. BirdLife International launched the ‘Save the World’s Sea Birds’ project together with its partner organizations around the world in 1997. The project is addressing the the following issues:
- Implementation of international cooperative activities
- Advocating saving sea birds nationally and internationally.
- Developing cooperative activities to save sea birds with stakeholders in fisheries and other fields.
